A federal judge has upheld New Mexico's seven-day waiting period for firearm purchases, denying the National Rifle Association's request for a temporary restraining order. U.S. District Judge James Browning ruled that the waiting period is likely constitutional and aligns with the historical regulation of firearms sales, providing a necessary buffer against impulsive purchases and ensuring thorough background checks. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised the decision, stating it aims to reduce gun violence and fill gaps in federal background check processes. The law, signed in March, includes exemptions for certain cases, such as transactions involving concealed carry permit holders and law enforcement agencies. The NRA, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of two residents, argues that the law could hinder access to firearms for domestic violence victims. Browning's ruling allows the case to continue as additional evidence is gathered.
