Former Texas A&M Running Back Darren Lewis Dies at 55
Darren Lewis, a former Texas A&M running back and the school’s all-time leading rusher, has died at 55 after a battle with cancer. Lewis, a two-time All-American, amassed 5,012 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns during his college career, breaking records previously held by Eric Dickerson. Despite his collegiate success, including nearly winning the NCAA rushing title in 1988, his professional career with the Chicago Bears was marred by substance abuse and legal troubles. After testing positive for cocaine before the 1991 NFL Draft, his draft stock plummeted, and he eventually played only three seasons in the NFL. Lewis's post-football life was troubled; he served a prison term from 2014 to 2023 for armed robbery. In his final years, Lewis found solace in religion and family support.
