Boulders on railway tracks
On Saturday morning, boulders and soil slid onto the railway tracks in the Kasara Ghat section of the busy Nashik-Mumbai route, but no injuries were reported, and train movement was largely unaffected. The incident was quickly addressed by the patrolling party, which halted the Varanasi-Mumbai Mahanagari Express briefly at Igatpuri station while the debris was cleared. This is part of a concerning trend, as heavy rainfall continues to cause landslides in various ghat areas, including Pune-Lonavla, where train movements were also disrupted earlier in the week. Authorities are implementing round-the-clock monitoring to prevent further incidents and are considering renovations to reduce gradients in problematic areas. The Central Railway expressed confidence that with two of the three tracks remaining operational, rail traffic would not be significantly impacted. However, these incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by railway services in landslide-prone regions.
