UN Experts Demand Improved Conditions at Bahraini Prison
Independent UN experts have urged Bahrain to address alarming conditions at Jaw prison, where allegations include inadequate access to food, water, and medical care, as well as the cutting of air conditioning in extreme heat, reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). The Bahraini government has dismissed these claims as false, asserting that inmates receive the same healthcare as the general public. The UN experts, who specialize in issues of torture, food rights, and health, reported receiving concerning allegations since March and noted a lack of response from authorities despite family complaints. They emphasized the need for humane treatment and respect for the dignity of prisoners, many of whom are dissidents opposed to the ruling Al Khalifa family. Human rights organizations have highlighted ongoing abuses and a culture of repression in Bahrain, particularly against the Shiite majority. The experts called for an end to restrictions on prisoner communications and movements, labeling the current conditions as unacceptable.
