Jaishankar Addresses Fishermen Detentions in Sri Lanka
The issue of Indian fishermen being detained by the Sri Lankan Navy continues to escalate, with multiple incidents reported recently. Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has sought the intervention of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to secure the release of around 100 fishermen and 200 boats. In a separate incident, 32 fishermen from Pamban were arrested by Sri Lanka for poaching, while four Indian fishermen went missing after a collision with a Sri Lankan naval vessel. The Indian government, led by Jaishankar, has assured that steps will be taken to resolve these issues, including facilitating a meeting between Indian and Sri Lankan fishing communities. A delegation of Tamil Nadu fishermen, led by BJP state chief K Annamalai, has also sought a permanent resolution to these recurring incidents. The Indian High Commission has successfully negotiated the release of 21 fishermen, who have safely returned home.
