Pennsylvania State Police
During a House Homeland Security Committee hearing, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris testified about the attempted assassination of former President Trump at a rally on July 13. He revealed that two SWAT-trained officers left their post overlooking a rooftop where the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was located, to search for him on the ground after he was flagged as suspicious. The officers had previously identified Crooks as suspicious for not entering the venue, but their departure left the rooftop unmonitored. Crooks, who was later killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper, fired shots that injured Trump and resulted in one fatality. In light of the security lapses, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned following the hearing. The Pennsylvania State Police are conducting a parallel investigation with the FBI to identify those responsible for the incident.
