Rancho Palos Verdes Faces Power Cut, Evacuations

Southern California Edison (SCE) has indefinitely cut off power to 140 homes in the Portuguese Bend Community of Rancho Palos Verdes due to accelerated land movement posing a significant safety threat. This decision follows a recent gas service termination by SoCalGas for the same area, both measures aiming to prevent infrastructure-related hazards such as wildfires and sewer spills. Residents are under evacuation warnings, and backup generators have been provided to mitigate immediate risks. The land movement, which has been ongoing since 1956 but recently increased to unprecedented rates, has led local officials to seek additional state assistance. LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn has committed $5 million to disaster response and is urging Governor Newsom to visit the area for further support.
