Coal production in India

India is set to expand its coal and lignite-based power generation capacity from 217.5 GW to 283 GW by 2032, requiring an investment of approximately ₹6.67 lakh crore (about $79.7 billion) for an additional 80 GW of coal-based capacity. This move comes alongside a commitment to increase non-fossil fuel power generation to 50% of total installed capacity by 2030, with current figures at 45.5%. In 2023-24, India's coal production rose by 11.65%, with targets set to reach 1,080 million tonnes for 2024-25, reflecting the government's focus on self-reliance and reducing imports. Coal India plans to produce 1 billion tonnes by FY2025-26 and is advancing numerous projects to enhance production efficiency. As of mid-July 2024, coal production reached 294.20 million tonnes, marking a 10.70% increase, supporting both industrial needs and energy market stability. This dual approach of boosting coal production while investing in renewable energy represents India's strategy to meet rising energy demands sustainably.
