Navajo Nation on uranium ore

The Navajo Nation is in conflict with Energy Fuels over the transportation of uranium ore through its territory without proper notification. President Buu Nygren expressed disappointment, stating the company did not inform tribal leaders in advance, which he views as a disregard for tribal sovereignty. Despite efforts to stop the trucks, they successfully left the reservation and headed to a processing facility in Utah. Energy Fuels maintains that the transport was legal and safe, having conducted stakeholder meetings to comply with regulations. The tribe plans to establish roadblocks on federal highways to enforce its ban on uranium transport, a law passed in 2012 that has exemptions for certain routes. Both sides anticipate a legal resolution to determine the legitimacy of the transport under existing laws.
